DUSITA BLOG GUEST OF THE MONTH: MEET CRISTIAN MARIANCIUC

Fulfilling our promise to keep the Dusita Blog open to the fragrance community, today we initiate our “Guest of the Month” series of posts. In these, we plan to spotlight friends-in-perfume from different countries and milieux. We would like to showcase the variety of personalities, idiosyncrasies and activities of people who love fragrances (including ours) with a passion.

I’m particularly happy to inaugurate these series with a man who is as multi-talented as he is gracious. At one point, Cristian and I were fellow contributors for Çafleurebon and we’ve been in contact ever since. He created a beautiful paper crane inspired by Parfums Dusita Erawan (our serene, comforting gourmand fougère), which we then purchased; his creation now stands next to Erawan’s display at our Paris boutique, integrated into Dusita’s artistic universe.

Despina Veneti, Parfums Dusita Blog Editor

Q: Welcome to the Dusita Blog, Cristian! Will you please introduce yourself to our readers?

A: My name is Cristian Marianciuc and I am a paper artist from Romania. I come from a small town in the north of the country and I am one of eleven children. I have a bachelor’s degree in International Studies but I’ve been a full-time artist since 2018. I grew up on a farm, so I have a strong connection to nature — it should come as no surprise that nature is my main source of inspiration! I also love animals: I have 2 dogs, 4 cats, geese and chickens, too.

I decided to work with paper, due to its ubiquitous nature. The fact that you can transform a humble sheet of paper into something beautiful and impressive drew me in. With my work, I aim to “translate” the world around me, to hold up a metaphorical mirror to my environment, and then recreate what I see, what I smell and what I feel.

Q: What is the meaning of fragrance in your life?

A: I had a magical childhood. We were never really well-off financially, so I wasn’t exposed to perfume early on. But smells have played an important role in my life. I have “olfaction soundtracks” for pretty much my entire life! My summers smelled like fresh hay, autumns were all about smoke (since we would collect and burn dried leaves), winters smelled like spices and traditional foods that my mother would prepare, and my springs smelled like grass and dirt.

I had my very own fragrant awakening in 2020. And the more fragrances I smelled, the more I felt like I had been missing out on a whole world of beauty. So I kept buying samples and gradually started to incorporate them in my work. On a personal level, I wear fragrance daily. Either to change my mood or to enhance it. It has become an indispensable part of my life. Fragrance is a means to an end but also an end in itself!

Q: How did you get to know Parfums Dusita and which of Pissara’s fragrances is your favorite?

A: I believe I discovered Parfums Dusita in 2022. I am certain that the first Dusita fragrance I smelled was Erawan, and it has since left a lasting mark on me. I was later able to explore the entire collection thanks to the generosity of Pissara and the Dusita team, and I felt like I was finally getting the full picture. Placing Erawan in the context of the rest of the collection made me appreciate it even more. I got the chance to create some very personal olfactive memories with it and now, each time that I wear it, I get to relive those precious moments. I love Erawan for what it is but also for the special place it holds for me on an emotional, intimate level.

I would also have to mention Issara here. When I first smelled it, it genuinely felt like a revelation! I had not come across anything like it before (or since), and it helped cement my realisation that perfume is such a personal, powerful thing. It is both transformative and transportive...
